Paul Arts mainly paints portraits. He focuses on painting portraits of known and unknown characters with the intention of augmenting certain emotions through his work. Faces of people, well known or not, inspire him to emphasize the feelings that are so often expressed in a furtive glance or a particular stance. The style of the portraits vary but have in common that they wish to engage the viewer.
In conversations most communication is transmitted non-verbally. Small, subtle movements of facial muscles or hand gestures reenforce the message or weaken it. This happens both consciously and subconsciously, thus adding information that can not be defined with just words. The result is a string of patterns and moments which come to us with such abundance that it is often difficult to receive and interpret them in a congruent way. In the era of digital conversation - with its short bursts of social media output - it has become even more difficult as a lot of information literally gets lost in translation. A portrait, however, makes one want to stop and take in the non-verbal moment. It gives you the time to really “read” the face.
In addition to being an artist, Paul is also a passionate permaculturist and libertarian. He has lived in Germany, Spain and The Netherlands and currently resides in Mijas, Spain.
